What can I say????

Only thing that I can say is WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!DSC_0010

I have now been using the G3TXQ Hexbeam for a number of weeks and the number of different DXCC's (Countries and Islands) worked this year has increased dramatically. I am working Japan, the Pacific, Asia, the Caribbean and USA on a daily basis - before I was struggling to get through to them - and I am getting calls from some real rare stuff. And the best thing is I am getting compliments on how strong my signal is and how clean my audio is!

Just as a example I thought that I would share a few contacts from my log with the different DXCC's worked;

08/02/10   A41NN               SSB         Oman
08/02/10   9M2MT               RTTY       Kuwait
08/02/10   HS0ZCW           SSB         Thailand
09/02/10   SU1HZ               SSB         Egypt
10/02/10   EP4MRG           SSB          Iran
13/02/10   KH7XS               SSB          Hawaii
13/02/10   KH6MB              CW           Hawaii
14/02/10   KH0/JA8VE       SSB          Marianas Islands
14/02/10   KL7LF                SSB          Alaska
14/02/10   TX4T                  CW            French Polynesia
15/02/10   XX9TL                SSB          Macau
26/02/10   9U1KI                SSB          Burundi
26/02/10   VK9X/G6AY      CW            Christmas Island (Near Australia)
26/02/10   XE2K                 RTTY        Mexico

Plus many others. All on the bands between 14.0 Mhz  (20M) and 30Mhz (10M). And for the none radio folk who read my blog here is a key as to the abreviations above;

CW          Morse Code or Carrier Wave
RTTY       Radio Tele Type   -  Computer generated and small bits of DATA transmitted - My favourite mode
SSB         Single Side Band -  Voice or Phone. This is actually me talking using a microphone.

This coming weekend sees the CQ WPX RTTY Contest, starting at 00:00 UTC 13th February through to 24:00 UTC 14th February.

As I need my beauty sleep I will be entering a single band single operator entry on 20M low power, and I will be using the club call M9W for this.

Please do call in and make the contact, and if you need a QSL then follow the instructions on our QSl managers page http://www.mc0urx.com where Tim has on line log aplications. Also the logs will be uploaded to LOTW and ClubLog immediately after the contest.

73's and see you in the pile ups.

G3TXQ Hexbeam built by Ant MW0JZE

Chris Colclough G1VDP

IMG_0040When I decided that I was going to build a Hexbeam I had made a comment in passing to Ant (MW0JZE) at one of the events the Strumble Head DX and Contest Group were putting on, that I was going to build one. And at the same time, without knowing, Ant had also made the decision to build one for him self. What Ant and I were looking for was a multiband antenna that covered 20, 17, 15, 12, 10 and 6M, with one feed line, and  that would perform better than the Cushcraft MA5B I had and the MQ36 hybrid quad he had (both compromise antennas that had worked well for both of us).

So when I returned to my home in the Midlands following the CQWPX contest 2009 I started to get the bits and pieces together to start this project. Luckily Rob (MW0RLJ) had had some of the bits of metal necessary in the construction in one of his sheds and kindly donated them to the project.

Reading all the various web pages on the construction of the antenna I decided to go with the G3TXQ broad band hexbeam using fishing poles for the spreaders. Looking around for the best prices for these simple Items was a task on its own, and eventually I managed to get them from a well known – within fishing circles that is – tackle shop in Norfolk, England. It was at this time that Ant and I were having a chat and discussing our SHDXCG trip to Ramsey Island for the IOTA that he mentioned he had built one and was on with a second one to take with us – see http://www.mc0shl.com for details and photographs – on the mini dxpedition.

This meant that not only could I see the easiest way to construct the antenna and solve some issues I had, but it would giveIMG_0006 me the opportunity to try the antenna out for myself.

Come the day we sailed over to Ramsey, I saw for the first time the engineering that Ant had performed on building these antennas. Not only were the materials used stronger than the parts I had, the overall construction was one that was going to last for quite a number of years – and these 2 were his prototypes!

After the event I sat chatting with Ant and asked him if it would be possible for us to get together to build one for my home. Ant said yes and we eventually managed to do this one November weekend where I went down and acted like Igor to Dr Frankenstein – Ant’s assistant in the building of the monster.

Prior to my arrival at Ant’s home he had requested I get some bits from a supplier for the construction and have it delivered to his home ready. Ant also made the centre post and did all the wiring for the connectors within the post before I got to him. Again I was amazed at the quality of the engineering in this part, in fact all the engineering of the antenna is second to none and I personally don’t think that it could have been constructed any better if in a factory environment.

Building and Erecting

IMG_0009Having built the antenna towards the end of November and not being able to get a antenna party together until the last weekend of January 2010 the antenna was in my house waiting to go up in the air.

This was done with the assistance of Tim (M0URX), owner and user of one of the Ramsey Hexbeams, and Vinny (2E0COV), who also is having one of these antennas. We got together on the Sunday morning and started by attaching the rotator to the mast. The actual construction of the antenna was the easiest and simplest of tasks in antenna building I have ever undertaken.

Starting with the centre post the spreaders are inserted into the hub, each having 2 support chords to get the shape – one to the centre and one to the next spreader to give the whole lot a little rigidity – taking opposite spreaders to the centre and then the chord to each spreader all the way round. This is shouldIMG_0028 take no longer than 15 minutes.

The next phase is the attaching of the wire for each element. Starting with six meters it is a simple task to thread each band through the premeasured support loops and connecting with a locking nut to the centre post. Again this took about 30 minutes due to the constraints and room in my small rear yard. But if you have the room in the garden then the whole construction should be around 30 minutes for 2 or 3 persons.

On air performance.

All I can say is “WOW”. If I can hear them I can work them. Using only 100w from my FT2000 I am working stations that I couldn’t hear with my old Cushcraft MA5B. I use all modes and working most DX with one call – especially on CW. This past IMG_0035weekend (6th and 7th February 2010) I had a play in the XE RTTY contest and I had a small pile up of Japanese stations on 20M, this could never have been achieved with the MA5B, and both antennas were mounted at the same height in the same spot at the bottom of my yard. All I need now is to get my amplifier working and I will be a big signal on the bands. I am so confident and happy with the antenna that I am going to enter this coming weekends CQWPX RTTY contest on 20M using the antenna to again put it through its paces.

Don’t get me wrong that all I have done is used it on 20M. I have tried every band – including 12, 10 and 6M – with good results. Although the 3 higher bands haven’t yet started to show any real DX I have made some contacts on them. On 17M over a period of about 3 hours I managed to work 6W/GM4FDM (Senegal) and 6W/PA3EWP (Senegal) on 3 modes CW, RTTY and finally SSB through the usual EU pileup. 15M has also allowed me to crack the pileups on all modes, with 5X1NH (Uganda), OH1VR/VP9 (Bermuda), XE1CQ (Mexico), and 6W/GM4FDM (Senegal) all being logged (these are just a selection on one page of my log) on this band. Other examples of stations worked and logged are 9M2MT (West Malaysia), A41NN (Oman), SU1HZ (Egypt), EP4MRG (Iran) and HL5BLI (South Korea).

If you are thinking of building one, or just want to buy one to erect then I can definitely recommend the G3TXQ Hexbeam being built by Ant. If you need more information then visit his website at http://www.g3txq-hexbeam.com where there are dimensions and constructional details, along with photos of mine being built within my yard. And I am not just saying this because Ant is a friend, I do believe this antenna is the best for any compromise type of antenna on the market. And I also think this would be a good antenna for portable use.DSC_0008

Today we are going to attempt to erect my G3TXQ Hexbeam.

Tim, M0URX, and Vinny, 2E0COV, are coming over and -hopefully- we will have it up in the air and working before it gets dark. I am also hoping to get the Windom working, or if not get the wires for the low bands up on the main mast and higher. I will be posting photos on here and on:

And boy have we had some.

Since getting back in to work this first week of 2010 we have had snow, or very cold temperatures every day. It has been reported that in some areas of the UK it has been as low as -16C!!!! Only recorded -6 here at my house.

Below are some photos of the trees and car park at work. Hopefully I will be able to get out and get some more of the local area and post them on here too.

Lets start with wishing all readers a Happy New Year, and I hope you had as much fun as what we all did down in Wales.

December 31st 2009
Yes the weather held off and we made it to my friend Rob's place without incident. In fact we made it in record time, 4 hours for 240 miles, and there are alot of lanes at the Welsh end where you have to be careful as a bus/tractor/other vehicle could be coming the oposite way.

Rob_4When I arrived at Rob's he was the only person there, his wonderful partner Jane was at work and Ant and his family had not arrived. So a quick brew and a catch up with Rob before the fun and games. The weather was also being kind with glorious sunshine and but with a cold wind. Rob had just started his lambing season off and had 5 new arrivals up to new years eve.

Not long after Jane arrived and again it was a brew and a catch up (for those who don't know what a brew is it is a mug of tea - the drink to have socially anywhere). The plans were discussed as to what was happening that night and we got on preparing the meal and food for the rest of the guests to arrive.

Ant (MW0JZE), his wife Laura and Eleri, their daughter, arrived and again giving us even more to chat about and catch up on. This was all the team members now on scene and we sat chatting whilst the food was cooking. Rob and Jane had also invited 2 of their friends along for the meal, Rob's mate Phil and Janes friend Kath both arrived just in time for the food to be dished up. Again Jane had excelled herself with another The_gangdelicious meal.

The wine flowed freely as did the conversation, but as we were preparing to have dessert there was a phone call from Janes elderly father that their dog had escaped and could not be found. Jane and Kath went round there to see if they could help out and were soon back, the dog was in the fields adjoining the house and came back wagging its tail as if nothing was wrong. Crisis over we set about the Sherry Trifle - again all home made and absolutely delicious - especially the sherry bit!

That was just the start of the evenings fun. We had planned to go up into Fishguard and see Jane's son Peter and his friend - collectively known as Neon - play in the town square where the main celebrations for new year were taking place. Ant and Family, myself, Jane and Rob all jumped into Rob's Landrover for the short trip to the town, where I must admit it is not the comfiest of rides. But it was worth it, the town square was full Neon_4of revellers all ready to celebrate the New Year. Neon were on stage when we got there and they played a fantastic set, getting every one dancing and enjoying the event.

From what was said Fishguard's new year celebrations are in the top 5 places to celebrate within the UK, and from my experience I can see why. Everyone was friendly and there were no silly iddiots pushing and shoving being drunken louts. Just people having fun, dancing and singing along to the band. Revelers_in_the_square_1

We decided to leave before midnight and return to the farm. A good move as this meant we could all have a drink and celebrate the midnight hour in our own way. The warmth of the farmhouse was most welcoming, and we soon got settled in for the night.

Firework_9Rob let off some fireworks in the field and we then sat and chatted. The girls and Rob went off to bed leaving Ant and I chatting about the plans for Ramsey Island in the summer, and maybe CQWW from the farm in October. The next thing we knew Rob was getting up for a cup of tea at 4am - his farmers clock where he wakes early - and we were still sat there chatting. Ant went to bed and soon after I followed to my room.

January 1st 2010
When I got up I was expecting to be the last as it was late morning, but it turned out I was the first one up, apart from Rob who still had to tend to his sheep and animals on the farm. The good news was that one of his sheep had had her lamb overnight and both were doing well. The weather was glorious, bright sunshine and quite warm. We sat on the small patio area at the rear of the farm house to have a cuppa and it was quite pleasant, but this was to change.Sunset_1

Mid afternoon and it started to snow, and boy did it come down. By 4pm it was about 50cm thick, and this is unusual for down in this part of the UK. As night fell it carried on snowing and the conditions got worse and worse. We had our evening meal and watched TV, with one eye on the weather.

January 2nd 2010
The next morning it was again bright sunshine and this started to melt some of the snow. Ant looked on the internet to check the roads and driving conditions. The main roads were clear of the snow and looked Ok to drive on, butthe lanes would be bad.

As I needed to get back on the Saturday for another new years do we decided to chance it. Loaded the cars and away we went, leaving Rob and Jane once more. I followed Ant out to the main roads, and the lanes were bad. A few times I had the rear end of the BMW stepping out - rear wheel drive - but managed to control it and keep the car the correct side up!

By the time we got to Llanelli the snow had virtually gone, and by Swansea on the M4 not a thing. But in the hills and valleys it looked like a Christmas card. Lots of snow and very picturesque. All the way back to the midlands it was sunny and warm, then when I got to Birmingham it rained, which does go to show that Jasper carrot was right all those years ago when he said "Where it always rains!"

So that was my new year. Lots of fun and great company. I would like to thank Rob and Jane for putting us all up and once more to Jane for her fantastic cooking and meals. To Ant, Laura and Eleri for their wonderful company. And to all of them for the fantastic New Year fun. Lots of laughs had bya all. And just as a warning Rob, I am planning to come down again next year (If that's OK?)....Ant_and_Eleri_1

Looks like my New Year plans could have been Kyboshed.

We are getting snow at the minute here in Central England, and our local council who look after the road network don't seem to be doing their job of clearing the roads. This also could prevent me getting in to work tomorrow morning.

Happy New year to you all and may 2010 be healthy and prosperous for you.

Having thought I had no chance of getting tickets to this event - sold out very quickly - and my mate Dave trying all week to get some from off E-Bay I had given up the ghost of ever going and seeing "The Modfather" at this local venue. But this was not to be.Image0070

I received a phone call from a friend - Tania Cullen - whilst in the office at work, about 17:00 but I was unable to answer her as the company rules state we can't take calls in work time, so I returned the call as I finished and was just leaving. Tania had a friend of a friend of a friend .... Long story there.... who had a ticket going and wondered if I would like to go. Well as there is too much month left at the end of the money I sadly had to decline.

Image0075

So it looked liked I was not going to be going after all. It was at this point that  2 other friends who I give a lift to talked me round and persuaded me that it was an oportunity not to be missed. So I called Tania and decided to go. I got the number off her of a lovely lady called Angie who had the ticket, another phone call and the ticket was mine.

We arranged to meet at the doors at 19:10 to do the deal. I took Rob and Tina home and then returned to the venue to park my car and go the Arts Centre. This is within Warwick University in Coventry, and there were loads of students still around on their way home or to the Uni bar.

It was at this point something really sureal happened to me. I was walking up passed some accomodation blocks and the taxi rank when a girl walking towards me wearing a short skirt did something that I still can't believe happened. Normally women will pull down and straighten their skirts, but this girl did the exact opposite and flashed me. I was the phone to Tim M0URX at the time and was taken aback by what happened, in fact I was shocked  and stunned! But she was a very attractive young girl and the image ingrained in my mind.

Image0077
Angie arrived with her partner Scott and their friend Keith and the meeting and introductions took place. They were really nice people and made me welcome in their group straight away. We went in to the bar and had a drink before going and taking or seats. Tania, Debbie, Kim and Debbies son Ellis arrived and said hello in the bar area.

We took our seats and had the perfect view, just about centre stage in the balcony. Weller came on stage and started playing, absolutely awesome. He played a mix of his old solo songs, songs from the Style Council, The Jam, and from his new album out in 2010.

Image0079His musicians were brilliant, Steve Craddock from Ocean Colour Scene on accoustic guitar! with a special appearnace of one of the bands young lad Lewis (see the bottom left of the pic to the left). A top night and thouroghly enjoyable company.

Thanks must go to Tania for calling me, Angie for the ticket, Scott and Keith for their company, and to the man  Paul Weller himself for a memorable gig.

As I had booked last weekend (27th November to 30th November 2009) off work I decided it was time to get the G3TXQ Hexbeam built, and so a trip was arranged to visit Ant (MW0JZE) and his lovely wife Laura and family to put it together. This was done as Ant has a small workshop that we could use to get all the bits cut and measured, and also work in the dry.

So after sleeping through my alarm I got up and set off in the BMW down to West Wales once more. Seeing signs on the M6 stating there was a problem between Junction 4 and 3 of the M42 I thought I would divert around and join the M40 to then get on the M42 - mistake number 1 of the weekend as the M40/M42 interchange is J4a. So I waas sat in traffic and travelled just short of 2 miles in a little shy of one hour. But once past this delay the journey was uneventful and quite pleasant. The scenery down the A449 through the Wye valley is quite stunning and is worth the trip in daylight. Image0065

After arriving at Ant's we got straight on with building the G3TXQ Hexbeam. First job was to spray the centre post Ant had already made through the week previous. We then had to go out in the cold to cut the wires for the elements, and also solder on the ring connectors for the attachment to the centre post and insulating chord. This done we then started on the spreaders. Again we were thankful of the cover as by now it had started raining and was getting dark (this is what happens when you set off late for a journey down from the Midlands to Wales!).

Having constructed one element and Laura having set off to Merthyr to see her sister for the night - nothing I had said or done but a new arrival in the family and a babies head wetting/girly night - we decided it was time to knock off for the day and get some food, showered and sat down to watch the Welsh Rugby game, sorry Ant that Wales lost to the Australians but they just did not play at all well. We had the regulation Indian take away meal and a few beers to wash it down with before sitting down to watch the recording.

Sunday morning and we were up and at it again. Making the spreaders and measuring the position for the  the clamps to fix the wire elements to the antenna. Sadly we also had to go to the local DIY store to get a new soldering torch as the old one of Ants failed on Saturday evening. When we arrived back at Ant's house Laura had arrived home and was cooking breakfast. We again got straight on with work and took a short break too  eat when the food was ready.

Image0066The day flew by and by mid afternoon we were putting the antenna together to test it and to make sure it was tuned. We connected the antenna analyser and with it only 10 feet off the ground it was virtually spot on across each band. A antenna I can use on SSB, CW and RTTY without worrying too much about not being tuned. We then stopped for a quick meal and stripped down the antenna to allow me to drive back to the Midlands.

Again a pleasant journey home without any incidents, though a quick personal break was needed about halfway home. I would like to thank Ant, Laura and Elerey for their wonderful hospitality once again. And to Ant for building and doing most of the work on the construction of the antenna. I am now looking forward to getting it in the air and hopefully working the DX with it.

The Enemy have to be one of the best groups around at the minute. And being from Coventry they do have a loyal followingMe__Andy_from_the_Enemy down here in the Midlands. Back in the summer at a charity event held at Nuneaton Borough's football ground I had the fortune of meeting Andy, the bass player, with the band, and after he pestered me all afternoon I eventuallty succumbed and had my photo taken with him.

But Back to the gig. Dave drove and we arrived in Brum with time to grab something to eat, a beer and get in to the gig to get some seats. The tickets we had were for up in the balcony and we were right above the stage, what a top view.
Image0049

They had 2 support bands on with them. The first a 4 piece from Manchester called Lowline. They came on stage and wow, what a sound. They played through a short set of their  own songs and certainly are a band to watch for in the future. The crowd on the dancefloor area in front of the stage got a mosh pit going and at times did get a little boystrous. But each to their own.

The second group were a 3 piece called General Fiasco, which although playing a similar genre of music to The Enemy Image0053just didn't have that get up and go that the other band did. The crowd reacted differently and to be honest were a little more enertaining. Not a recomendation but may be one day.

By the time the road crew had cleared the stage for The Enemy the crowd were well up for a good night.
Image0061
The band came on stage and boy did they sound good. Playing a mix of songs from their first 2 albums and throwing in a couple of new gems. And finishing off with a cover of The Jam's "In The City". I also have to take my hat off to Andy as he did some crowd surfing at the very end, absolutely excellent.

Another good night with a top mate.

First saw this band back in the early 80's, and I have to admit that they were better this time round. Maybe it was the fact that last time it was at the Rotherham Show on the Herringthorpe Playing fields, and an open air gig at that.

It didn't start too well though. We arrived in Nottingham and parked the car, deciding to go for a couple of beverages before the show - well it would be rude not to.......Image0041
Got to the venue for 7.30pm only to find the doors still closed and the queue growing, so off back to the local hostelry for another glass of liquid dancing juice. Returned to Rock City at 8.15 and still the doors were closed, but by this time the street was full of people wanting to get in.

A member of staff came to the door and said that it would be another 30 mins before they could say whether the gig was going ahead or not....
Well this almost sparked a riot, all the crowd control (Bouncers to you and me) were called inside, a couple of police riot vans arrived, and a couple of the bobbies went inside.... 8.45 and Image0042doors were opened. In we went and got a position right at the front, fantastic.

The gig started and boy the floor was bouncing. If you can imagine getting on for 6 or 700 40year old skinheads, rudeboys, mods all jumping up and down at the same time you would be just about there. After the first song I stated a coughing fit and lost touch with Dave and Pete so retired to the wings to watch the band. I'm too old for in the moshpit.....

A top gig and a top night with the best mates a bloke could have. - Cheers boys.Image0046

Just as a follow up; Dave saw Neville Staples 2 days after the gig in Coventry - he still lives in the same house as years ago and is a top geezer. Dave asked him what was wrong and Neville was badly (he was just coming out of the doctors surgery) with flu and was wanting to call the gig off. He asked Dave if it was true about the riot vans and almost kicking off......

This has to be one of the best weekenders on the calendar. It was literally a last minute decision to go this year, we booked the accomodation and bought the tickets 2 weeks before going. We knew that it was going to be a good do with the amount of people that were going from Nuneaton.

Our little group this year consisted of me, Dave and Martin. Sadly we all had to work on the Friday, but we all managed to wrangle early finishes. I picked Martin up on my way home, nipped to my ghouse to get my gear, and then picked Dave up and got on the road for 5:30pm. 3 Northern Soulies in X 50UL C, my BMW 330ci.

Blackpool_2009_What_its_all_aboutWe set off up the A5 and decided to jump on the M6 Toll to beat the traffic, not one of us thinking about the Toll charge - it does not take 5p pieces in the cash tray - so we held a queue of traffic behind us as we fumbled for change at the toll booth. A staedy drive up the M6,  onto the M55 and arrived at the digs on Albert Road, Blackpool at 20:15 - not bad for Friday evening and rush hour traffic. After a quick freshen up we headed in to town to get our wrist bands and a few beers.

The Tower Ballroom was rocking to some top Nortghern Soul tunes that we have come to expect. We met up with the others from Nuneaton - about 40 people in total on the Saturday night DSCF0020with the ones who travelled up on Satuday - including Cliff (Arnie), Simon, Brian (Wealsle) Les and their partners and too many more to mention.

Northern Soul, a few beers and good mates = recipe for a top weekend.

The Friday evening went far too quick and we before we knew it it was time to head back to the digs and some sleep. We were awakened at 8am by the fire alarm in the hotel going off at 8am, Dave thought it was his phone alarm and ran round his bedroom trying to switch it off, Martin wondered where he was, and I thought the toast was burnt!!!!!!!! But it turned out they do the alarm test to see how many people have a hangover and to make sure you are up for breakfast. So as we were up it was a quick shower, run down and get breakfast before heading in to Blackpool for some fun and more Northern Soul.

We bumped in to Weasle and Les in the main shopping arcade and hooked up with them for a laugh. Weasle is as madDSCF0002 as a bucket of frogs. Not only did he have  us in fits of laughter with his jokes, but he frightened 2 poor Next assistants to death when he ran up to them doing a pirate impression - they were collecting for Children in Need dressed as Pirates at the door of the shop - one of them had kittens literally. Donations duly went in the buckets to appease them, but they did see the funny side of it. A coffe in a cafe and it was time for more drinks in the Soul Suite, one of Blackpools many bars around the town.DSCF0005

Again up to the Tower Ballroom for more Northern Soul before back to the hotel for a quick kip, shower and changed for the night in the Northern Do. We set off out about 8:30 and went straight to the do as we had some seats reserved by Weasle and co. Thanks guys.

We got there and decided to let a group sit down at the table as we were up and down to the dance flooor like YoYos. The music again was first class. Thankfully there was a short break for usDSCF0028 mere mortals whilst some of the countries top dancers compete for the World Northern Soul Dancing trophy. Weasle entered and did really well getting through almost to the final 4, I think it was a close decision as there was almost 5 in the final and Weasle was the last one out. Well done old boy....

Again the night was too short - although it was around 4:30am when the team all decided to leave and the do ended at 5am - so back to the digs for some well earned rest. Up again at 8am down for breakfast and we decided to get straight on the road home. A nice easy drive and we were back in Nuneaton for 1:45pm, all my charges dropped off and safely back in the local area.

Top weekend and looking forward to next year. Will be booking after new year.

What a busy few weeks/weekends.....

Started with the annual pilgrimage to Wyboston Lakes back in October for the RSGB convention, then the CQWW Phone contest with M0XXT (see below) which brought us into November.

This last month has seen a trip to Blackpool for the annual Northern Soul weekend, a trip up to see mum and do a presentation on DXing at Mexborough and District Amateur Radio Society (MADARS), up to Nottingham to see the Specials, Over to Birmingham to see the Enemy and then down to Llanelli in Wales to visit my friends Anthony, Laura and Family (main reason for visit was to build a new Hexbeam for home)

Just up from a 12 hour sleep, this year I was one of the operators at M0XXT. M0XXT_1

We entered the Multi 2 category - 2 transmitters with multi operators - and we think we have done well. We ended with 4100 contacts for 3.7 million points (ish).

M0XXT_3Had a great weekend but was so tired yesterday with only having 3 hours over Saturday night - and this was on a table in a cold hall.  I think it is going to take a few days to get back in the swing.

Thanks must be said to Callum M0MCX and his team for inviting me down there, and to them for erecting the antennas and masts so we could turn up and operate. Had loads of fun, and laughs.

What a busy few months I have just had.

Sold all my radio's, taken part in the IOTA contest with the boys, bought the private reg number for my car - none radio related - and been to a few scooter and Northern Soul dos. A busy social life if nothing else.

I also had a slight mental breakdown - kept well hidden from friends and family - where I just wasn't interested in anything in my life. It was a hastle to do just about anything, and I think only one person knew what was happening but kept quiet and was there to talk to. But I think I am now back level headed and starting to get my hobbies back on track.

Appologies to all those who I may have upset or put out. I will be getting round to all of you at some point and having a chat. As for the car number plate, X50 ULC, which when on my car reads X 50UL C (Kiss, Soul, Chris).

See all my friends soon, and all my good radio buddies will have a good catch up at the RSGB convention.

Keep the faith.

Last week I was up in Yorkshire to see my girlfriend and visit my family, and with it being VHF Field day I decided to go and MADARS-1visit old friends at Mexborough and District Amateur Radio Societies field day contest station.

What a cracking day. The sun was shining, good company and many old and new friends were present.

I managed to get on the air and work a few on 2M VHF adding to the clubs score, had a go on 70cm making 6 or 7 contacts to add to the score on this band. MADARS_6

The club also held the summer BBQ, with Darryl, G0FUO (Pictured above) as the chef. Burgers, sausage etc all round. And as is tradition on field days/Summer BBQ the rain came. But not to dampen the spirits the BBQ was moved in to the marquee and the food was consumed and a few drinks had by those not driving.

MADARS_11It was also good to see that the club has a small contingent of youngsters who are all wanting to learn and get going in the hobby. Michael, G7??? (pictured above with Darryl) the tutor at the club held a couple of training sessions for the kids and newcomers to get them on their way to the foundation licence.

Maybe next year I will have to make it a full weekend rather than a flying visit and get on the air with the club for what was, and to some extent still is, a major event in any clubs calendar.

Thanks all at MADARS for making me welcome, and I look forward to paying you a visit one evening for a talk.

Why did I think this would ba an easy job, and that I would have it done within a few weeks? Every where in the house is covered in a thin layer of plaster dust, and I am getting fed up of ceaning it off only for it to be back within the hour. But I know it will all be worth it in the end. The walls all have fresh plaster on them and I will be posting some before and after photos on here.

Not only did I think it would be a good idea to decorate, I also thought it would be a good idea to take the hardboard cover off the doors - they are all the old 4 panelled type that look fantastic when rubbed down and painted. What a mistake. The door from the dining room to the kitchen has been hung upside down, and looking at the one to my stairs that also looks like it could be on upside down. The one into my lounge is OK and that will be rubbed down and painted.

So I have decided to take the kitchen door off completely, and just have it open plan style, it was always left open any way so it will not hurt.

Pics to follow and I will be back on the air in no time...
